Hi-Can someone tell me what the limiting factors are to obtaining a wireless connection speed greater than 54 Mbits/s. This is the figure i'm getting when I view in Network and Sharing Centre. When I connected a second laptop (wirelessly) to my network connection it showed 132 MBits/s. My wireless card is Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 AGN but I didn't take a note of other.

It's a hardware that is being used. With 11a/b/g/n and now dual band equipment there are a lot of variables. 11n Routers are required to play nice with others too, so this will kill the wide 40 band at times. Mixed 11g/n will also slow things down. The best is 11n as far as speed, 300mbps. 11n speeds drop off pretty quick as distance increases. Where of course 11g is limited to 54mbps. Now these are max and not throughput so - over head. Then there this mixed mfg chip sets, some do not play well with each other. Drivers is another wrench in the box that impacts speeds.

Thanks for info blue68f100. I have just found out that if I'm using WPA-TKIP encryption then adapter will not go more than 54 mbit/s data speed. I have now changed it to WPA2 with AES encryption and speed has increased up to 117/130 mbits/s. Sorted.

Here is a hardware limitation
4965 AGN Supports 802.11n standard 40MHz channels only in 5GHz spectrum to minimize negative impact to legacy devices/networks nearby
Here is the intel page for your card
