I've found some posts that the wireless card that ships in the Qosmio X505-890 doesn't work very well. Is this true? And if it is, is it difficult to install a new (read: better) one?

What kind of card is it? You may want to try it on your network first before considering a replacement this early based on other people's comments. It may work fine for you. I've heard lots of people complaining about the MSI GX630's stock wlan adapter for example, but I use it on a daily basis and have not had a single issue with it yet.
