Hi, I have in the past owned several comps which connected to the web using a wireless setup ala USB wireless adapters or PCMCIA. I recently bought a laptop with built in wireless and noticed that the wireless boot time on this comp was virtually instant! Whereas the others didn't boot till after the O/S had been up for some time. Why?
Is it because the ariel is bigger?
Also, the on board card ( which the forum member who helped with a driver prob informed me was ancient ) out performs the adapters by a considerable margin.
My router syncs at 14400 +/- 200 and this on board card gives me 85% of the sync speed which in my book is about max, yet the adapters only give about 65%. Why?

The comps are/where all running Vista.

    cheers,
    Eddie.

I believe the time to connect to the network is a lot faster on Windows 7 and Windows Vista compared to previous operating systems. (If you are using Windows.)

The on-board card generally connects to two antennas on the laptop which take up more space than what can be fit into the portable adapters.

Also, I found that my PCMCIA wireless card was quite sensitive to which direction the laptop was facing and I usually had to point it towards the direction of the router.
