Wireless adapter DEAD suddenly.

Its an interesting issue which anyone can face after updating to Vista SP1 on their Laptops with WiFi

 

A week & a half after i installed Vista SP1 ..
my Wireless adapter died suddenly when i resumed the laptop from hibernation... all this happened yesterday.

i was confused...went to Device manager.. Microsoft ISATAP Adapter driver is corrupted it says and cant install due to error Code 31. and nVidia nforce networking controller also corrupted.
and Broadcom Wireless LAN adapter has vanished.

System restore back to 3 days didnt work ..


Called up HP customer service...they couldnt help after they tried all Protocols in their database...

when i told them that Device manager also crashes & says MS management console not responding....they figured its a serious OS problem.

they finally told me to contact Microsoft Singapore.

i called MS branch office..logged my report..they said they ll check with their technical dept. and call me back ..never called me.

So called HP last time..they said they are willing to Pick up my notebook & take them to their service centre...and try fixing & most likely they ll format so i should back up my data.

i told them thanks but i dont wanna format my comp as thats a last & brainless measure.

So, the Networking hardware is just DEAD on my comp.

Finally what happened? can u guess?

 

IPv6 or power savings settings on the NIC?

 

You woke up, it was just a nightmare?

 

Its reality my friend.. ...in the evening the problem got fixed when i installed Driver update for Broadcom from HP website..

But but but ...when i woke it up from hibernation..then SAME PROBLEM ..STRIKEs BACK!!!!

Microsoft finally called but that time it was fine.


Now again its screwed up

the Broadcom Wireless Driver has some serious issue with Vista SP1 i think..

The NIC driver has some serious issue....

I tried underVolting CPU using RMClock and now its permanentaly on low Voltage & highly unstable.

 

It would seems that Intel chipsets might be the cause of your nightmare; check this;

This is my suggestion;

1. Remove SP1
2. Upgrade all your drivers, including for broadcom one
3. Re-install SP1

If the above doesn't work, then I would just suggest to completely remove SP1 and go back the way it was before, working normally, is not a big deal, as many people will tell you, SP1 doesn't add a great deal of things, so not to have it is not a bad thing.

Perhaps before to do all what I said, try to get the most recent drivers for the intel chipsets, like the northbridge, southbridge, etc. And if the issue persist, then go ahead and proceed with points 1 to 3.

 

hey i am an AMD user...so i have nVidia motherboard..

i updated the drivers but after SP1 uninstall i will install again.

most likely SP1 is causing driver corruption.

For the Intel northbridge/southbridge go directly to the intel web site, which are Intel chipsets model?

 

Wirelessman, I don't think installing the Intel chipset drivers on his AMD Turion based system will do much good. Think he needs to install the Nvidia chipset drivers for his system.

 

Yes, I agree he needs the appropriate nvidia drivers, but I have read that some issues with SP1 were coming from the intel chipset drivers, that's very precise information.

No. The chipset for his system is manufactured by Nvidia. Intel doesn't make chipsets for AMD processors, only Intel.

 

You are right, he did say that he has an AMD computer based, then we need the Nvidia Northbridge driver

 

Actually, there is no northbridge on recent AMD systems. The memory controller has been inside the processor for quite a few years. There's only a single chip in recent AMD systems. But, you got the general idea correct.

Nvidia calls them media and communications processors (MCPs).

 

HP & Microsoft both have failed to help me..!!!!!

I updated nVidia as well as Broadcom wireless drivers....but the Wireless NIC is just dead..

it starts working suddenly but goes dead again ..

rite now on same laptop i am connected via Wired Ethernet cable ..its fine.

But its the WIRELESS connection thats DEAD!

P.S: I have uninstalled SP1 completely but unfortunately it didnt help and now i am sitting here with stupid Vista original & No Wireless.

So, SP1 wasn't the cause of your issue, then you will have to work in your nic side a little. Is your nic a minicard or a PCI slot card?

 

Its attached to PCI slot i think.

Integrated with the nVidia 410/430 motherboard,

Broadcom Wireless device is having some serious issue..

do u think its hardware problem? coz i was dowloading a lot these days ..

so maybe it got BURNT OUT due to too much downloads???

I don't think that would affect the nic, it is made for that, but this is what I would suggest, try an external nic, you may purchase it and see if it works, if it does then for sure is your broadcom card that just went broke. If it doesn't work then there is another issue deterring you to connect wirelessly, and I guess you can return the nic, and continue troubleshooting your internal card.

How long do you have the laptop?

 

um I just skimmed this thread so i may not have all the info but have you tried reinstalling the OS? formatting the current OS and installing? Using an external USB drive and install OS (vista) there and see if the problem persists

if no luck in number 2 and 3 then it is highly likely your wireless adapter is faulty!

btw Vista's hibernation is crap! DO NOT use it! My desktop PC had a similar problem to your laptop and its an nvidia motherboard too!

I think i either reinstalled Vista or just formatted and reinstalled, I couldnt find a fix and dont expect to find one. I tried a few fixes but none helped!

 

I think this problem can be fixed without formatting the entire OS..

my comp has tons of Data & Program files & formatting will be devastating for me.

It does not sound like a hardware issue, although possible. It just sounds like Vista refuses to load the driver up for some reason. That is a stinker. I hope it works out. Again, a good reason to find a good backup solution. Nothing beats a backup of your userdata. Even a sinkhole that swallows your laptop isn't going to put you back to far if you have a backup.

Heck. Vista even has a built in one. For you to backup %userdata%, it would take about 20 gb, or depending on how many music files you have. The programs can always be reinstalled. I myself have a lot of music and videos, but they are just copies of what I already have on my server. My outlook data is what is most important.

Dude you are gonna waste your time trying to find a solution that may not be there cuz it hasnt been solved or no one yet has experienced it. It still could be a hardware problem, but very likely a Vista issue.

I suggest you go buy an external drive, back your stuff up to there, format and reinstall Vista.

Sometimes with Windows the only thing you can do is format/reinstall

If no one has experienced this issue here you wont find a solution here. If Microsoft and HP have failed to help you, no one here will be able to help you either. You need to either google it or continue to work with Microsoft. Reinstalling would save you a lot of time in the end.

 

Then another alternative is to have your vendor to check what the problems is, if the wireless card is broken then they will have to give you a new one, you may then choose another better brand.

 

That MS and HP fail to you and me and to everyone is not a surprise, I have never experience a real good support from the big OEM's and even from the vendors.

This is why nocturna is coming to this forum with the hope that several heads can be better than one. I'm convinced that if we continue analysing this issue we will come out with a solution, please guys don't give up.

Also, let's put egos aside and let's focus on the issue.

 

I downloaded Broadcom drivers from HP website for my laptop.

I installed them, they installed successfully.

when i restart my computer they dont show up.

BUT suddenly sometimes when i reboot my comp the Driver installs automatically & internet starts working for 2-3 mins until i resume it from standby ..then it crashes again.


its got to do smthg with nVidia + Broadcom compatibility issue.

 

Make me a favor my friend, I know that is a tedious task, bring it to the vendor, they must fix it for you, the laptop is under warranty, and as I said you may try to get another more reliable wireless card, you may have to pay some extra, but it will never be as high as the market price.

Bring it to HP and see what they can do, if it's still under warranty they should do something. Did you reinstall Vista?

 

If you bring it to hp, they will restore the os to factory setting to check if it's not software related...

 

have you even tried to just reinstall the OS without formatting?

 

I will take it to HP but tell them to not Format my Drive.

I dont wanna lose all my program files over a single problem.

Today suddenly the Broadcom Drivers were installed automatically on my comp...

and now Wireless is working fine..


ISSUE FIXED!

Vista is playing mind games with me i think..

How can an OS automatically in betweeen the usage realise that WiFi is not working?

It searched preconfigured folders and installed the Broadcom driver..

now Wireless NIC is working.

 

I understand your feeling, we have all passed by there at least once, HP might not need to do a clean install of your OS, but if they do, then you need to be ready to let them do it, to have the laptop working properly come before not to to lose some files.

However, you don't need to lose your data, just do a selective backup, your MS Office files for example, including your e-mails in case you are using a local appplication and that you are not leaving a copy in th ISP server.

 

Fantastic, this give us a good lesson about Broadcom, hummmmm, I don't think I will recommend it.

 

But now i am stuck without SP1.


Will wait for HP to fix the bugs.

My wireless adapter, the same kind: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN on HP Presario v6000 died too, in september, HP had the motherboard replaced, after a cold winter with dynamic changes in temperature the wireless broke again, I had a hard disk failure and my sound card is next, I am afraid.

WHat I did was: Bought new Hard disk, new USB wireless and all is fine now...I am waiting for the sound card to kick the bucket, along with the battery, but thats all.

I am planning ot get the broadcom out of my laptop, because it periodically turns on, and starts a conflict with the USB, so yeah.

 

By the way, I wouldn't rely on your wireless working again after you shut down the computer or put it to sleep, this is indefinitely a communication problem between the wireless adapter and the motherboard.

Or it might be easier to fix, but this is less likely to be the issue, there are two small wires attatched to the wireless adapter and they go farther into the laptop, I think they go to the battery.

This was unfortunately not my issue, as they had a circuit going on, meaning that the wireless is communicating with the battery, but still not working. Also, my wireless may have burnt out the Wireless Router I had, so this means it is malfunctioning badly.

 

Hummm,, it doesn't seem to be an isolated issue with Broadcom, this more than a coincidence. The card might work now but it might fail later, we'll see.

 

It failed again..

When i hibernated the comp & resumed it.

I have ordered Recovery discs...hate to say it but i ll have to start backing up now.

Even then if it fails i ll send the laptop to HP to check hardware

 

Yes, I think that's the wiser thing to do, I feel sad for you to have to be without the computer, let's see, some times (dependign how good is your vendor) more than 1 month.

Very critical, don't settle for another Boradcom card, get something else, I like Intel 4965AGN, but other NBR gurus like also linksys and D-Link. Start a thread and ask recommendation for a minicard, actually I think there are already some threads on that account.

Even if you have to pay some extra (don't accept to pay the full price), do not get another Broadcom.
