    Hi!

I am thinking about buying a new wireless router and I really want it to keep the connection at all times. Most of my friends have problems with their routers when playing games. They lose connection for a short while and are unable to get back into the game (for exampel War III). The guy at my local computer store told me that especially d-link has this problem because their routers tend to get to warm. Is this true? Are there any other brands to stay away from or could you recommend me a good wireless router?

My wireless card is a atheros ar5008x if that makes any differences.

    Thanks

    Carl

Personal suggestion would be a Rangemax NXT from Netgear. Very reliable, nice setup wizard and most of the security options work fine too.

I will always work with Netgear over any other manufacturer at the moment for stability and useability.

I use Netgear hardware and like it, very stable never acts up. But it was not that way when it was new (model release). It had a very bad firmware issues, they pushed it to market before the firmware was ready. I became a beta tester for them and helped them work the problems out. Now it is about as good as it gets. This is a SMB class VPN router, a lot more bells and whissels than most. All of their newer stuff has been good, just make sure you update the firmware to the latest version, as with any hardware.

Well, if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks, then you can always consider Linksys. It is branded but I find their firmware stable in comparison to other brand (D-link or.. Inexq) better. If you aren't satisfied with their firmware, you can always consider flashing it with dd-wrt, really nice 3rd party firmware that makes your 50 bucks router into 500 bucks :O the UI is quite fancy :D

If you're paying for Linksys, you're paying the extra few bucks for a friendly UI.

I haven't personally used of play with Netgear routers before but.. sounds like just as good as Linksys. :D

You are going to have problems with any 11n Draft hardware till 6mo after the spec is finalized. Thats the joy of being an early adapter, as the mfg use the general public as BETA Testers. We went through the same thing with 11g, surprising how short of memory users have.

    Thanks again for all replies!

I got myself a rangemax next and it seems fine. Only problem i had so far is WarCraft III lagging. When I plug in a cable between the router and my computer it works like a charm, but when I am using wireless it is unplayable. I did not forward any ports, but I cannot see how that should be a problem since it works with the cable plugged in. Any ideas?

You should see about setting up QoS to give you priority over other traffic. That is what gaming routers do.

use WPA2 on the router/connection/computer and you will probably achieve much higher speeds and no lag.

right now i am using "WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" and it lags.
"WPA2-PSK [AES]" is also available. Will it make any difference using this?

I also tried forwarding ports now. I dont think it made any difference. =(

Enable DMZ Hosting and port forwarding. I would'nt waste my money on a gaming router unless you have a lot of money and no where to spend it. You can set the priority of any type of data on any decent router.

This shouldn't make a major diffrence.
