I'm wondering, when I'm connected directly to the modem, I have a certain IP Address, but when the modem is connected to my router and I connect thru the router, only the first digit is the same - the other three numbers are different, is this normal?

I am presuming that you have DSL or cable.

Your router likely is configured to provide DHCP services. You can configure your router yourself and alter the addresses DHCP provides to clients. A common private IP address range is 192.168.0.xxx.

When you connect direct you have a public IP, when through your router private. As fas as security a private is safer with all of the SPI firewalls built in to routers.
