    Heres my situation:

I have a linksys wrt54g router. currently the computer upstairs is a desktop attached to a usb wireless adaptor. I only get like 1 or 2 bars. I heard some solution like get better antennas for the router or get a pci adaptor instead of using usb or using an access point as a repeater attached to the wireless computer. These seems like good ideas but they are also expensive. before I drop 70 bucks for antennas and 50 for repeaters and adaptors I want to hear what people think.

Running hundreds of feet of CAT5 to the computer is not practical.

Upgrade your desktop to a PCI wireless card, preferably a Linksys. You can also change channels, relocate your wireless router, and reposition your router's antennas. If your 54G supports a hyperwrt flash, do it and then you can boost your power output.

An access point should be hardwired to the wireless router, and not connected to a wireless computer. Don't bother with the AP idea.

Relocate can mean a bunch of things. You can raise it, lower it, or move it side to side.
