To the moderator: please shift this to an appropriate section if necessary.

    Hi,

I have a Compex NP27G wireless router, an HP LaserJet 1015 printer, a dv6137tx notebook and an assembled desktop computer. At present, the router is connected to an ADSL modem and the desktop is connected by wire to the router. The laptop is configured to use a wireless connection.

The wireless router has 2 USB ports. I want to be able to connect my laser printer to the router directly so that it can be used by the laptop WITHOUT the desktop sharing the printer. I have been able to configure the setup when the printer is connected to the desktop and is shared (using File and Printer sharing in XP). However, this isn't what I want to do: I want the printer to be accessible to the laptop even when the desktop is switched off. I couldn't find any working solution on the internet, hence am posting this question here.

How can I get this to work, without having to purchase additional hardware? I would like to extend this to my Linux installation as well.

    Thanks in advance,
    Cheers

    Vivek.

I believe the router itself needs to have a print server capability for it to work. Im no expert in wireless networking though.

Well move this to the Networking section for better responses

Also router has to have abitly be printer server

As flipfire say winch it might be that it has usb port or might just be for thumb drivers you best to check the book or manaual

I suggest you look at you router Manaual you most like need to setup you printer port to be on network port that had ip address of you router

    useing lpr

Ok. The router box says "built in file and print server feature". The issue is how to configure it.

go to your router settings page, you might be able to configure it from there.

Usually a network printer needs an IP address

then you add a printer using that address in windows

Just connect the printer to the router and then go to the computers and install the printer, press the browse option to find the printer in the network, it should find it. You will need the printer driver to install it in your computers.

you may also need to connect the laptop to the printer, via usb, if the printer has that output, to originally configure it.......... not sure at all......

Does the users manual for the router have anything constructive to say? If not, have you checked on the manufacturer's website under support to see if there's anything constructive there?

I have the exact same setup
Connect the printer to the router. Then open the admin page of the router and see whether printer is usb0 or usb1.

Now, open the add printer wizard in windows. When it says search, select manual option.
Then, select create a new port. Select tcp/ip port and then enter the router ip address in the address. Select LPR. In usb queue enter usb0 or usb1 depending on which port the printer is connected to the router.
Then, install the printer driver as normal.
I hope my post is not too confusing :)

Not at all, that's the most efficient way to do it.
