I want some advice on setting up a Wireless Network at home. There are tow laptops which I want to connect to the internet. The problem is our internet provider supplied a USB modem. Are there any routers which support USB Modems. The telephone line goes directly into the Modem from the wall jack and the ADSL "signal" comes into the laptop via USB. Also, on my laptop there isn't an ethernet port which is annoying and it dosen't have wireless LAN capabilities. IS there some kind of adaptor that converts a USB port into Ethernet? I'd like to keep my laptop wired if possible but I don't mind if it's wireless. Mt dad's laptop on the hand has both an ethernet port and it has in-built wireless LAN capabilities. I just want some advice on what products to buy and weather it is complicated to set up or not.

For a notebook, i would think about just getting a plain Intel 2915 card. It has A/B/G which means that it has different network types so depending on what router you get now, or you still have this card and get a new one down the road, it will have "one" of the latest wireless technologies. (Well N is better now as we all know).

As for advice, is there anything particular? Like Setup/Security/Trouble Shooting/Buying Equipment/Configuration on your computer, all that

I don't think that will work. The USB port is for the built-in print-server, not to connect a broadband modem.

Lil Mayz, the connection software you need is built-into the modem, so you wouldn't need to install anything special on any of the PCs for the modem or the router.

You will most likely need a modem that has an ethernet jack, as most routers don't have the USB connection for it. Ask your provider if you can change the modem. You can also buy a combo router/modem if your provider allows you to purchase your own equipment. (Oddly enough, I've heard that many modems in the UK only connect via USB, while here in the States ethernet is much more common.)

Yeah im not completely sure on the USB router.

But, maybe call your ISP and see if you can get a Ethernet cable modem. I have the option for both on my modem. i believe the only reason why modems have USB cable jacks is because so you can connect wired from the modem to a desktop/stationary notebook.
    As far as

Your computer should automatically detect it, but if it doesn't, you just simply install the modem onto the notebook.

not really nick....I seem to have "conquered" the slight problem and confusion. I bought the Belkin Wireless G Router which has an in-built ADSL Modem....so I can forget the annoying USB Modem...it has a USB output as well, so I've solved the problem with one device.

    Thanks again nick
