I have a sony vaio wireless laptop. It has great signal strenght in picking up wireless networks. After finding a wireless network i can connect to that network quite easily. Well my computer says my wireless network connection is connected but everytime i connect to a wireless network and i try to get onto the actual internet i get the 'Page cannot be displayed' screen. This has happened more than once when bringing my laptop to various places so this isnt a certain wireless network that is causing the problem. Ive messed around with everything i could possibly think of. My computer says im connected with usually excellent or very good signal strength but the internet doesnt work, any suggestions?

Just because you get a wireless signal, doesn't mean you have internet. How is the modem connected to the router?

Also, might want to update your firmware for the router by going to the routers website, look for downloads and then update the firmware

it's quite possible that the networks you're connecting to require logins (security is enabled) or payment (should direct your browser to a pay site once you connect).

like nick said, just cause you can see a network doesn't mean you can automatically use it. some places have free access like dietrich's coffee shop or paniera bakeries (no idea if you have those near you). can you connect to your home wifi network? can you connect where you know for sure that the wifi access is free and clear?

EDIT: it would be helpful if you can post your ipconfig/all results when you're connected to help troubleshoot.

Im not using a router, my laptop doesnt need one to pick up wireless networks, its already installed on my laptop if that makes sense. but yes i can connect to my wi-fi network at home. So even when my computer gives me the pop up bubble alert that says 'wireless network connection is now connected' i might not be able to actually get onto the internet?

What #3 is asking is whether, on *your home network* you can get on the Internet. You say you can get connected to your wifi network at home, but can you get on the Internet? You initially indicated that "getting connected" at other places was no problem. Hence the ambiguity in your statement.

Try going to your local library, one with free wireless, and see if you get the laptop to work there.

It doesn't, what are you using rather than a router? How is the modem if you have a router, connected to the router? You lost me with that statement

you need a router to connect to a network. if you don't have one, that means your connecting to someone else's network.

cable or dsl box > ethernet cable > router > wifi connection > notebook.

yes, just because you connect to a router doesn't mean you can surf the web. you need access through the router. you can search online or best buy/fry's, etc. to find a wifi router to plug into your cable or dsl box.
