    Hi

I have two laptops - Acer 5715Z with Atheros 5007E and Asus Z94L with ASUS USB wireless - connected in wireless Ad hoc network at 54mbps. The laptops are at like 0,5m from each other, nothing between them but air. Both laptops have Windows XP SP3.
Now I use the the ACER as a 'server' and move the ASUS around, which mean when I'm not on my desk I browse internet and watch videos on the ASUS. The thing is, whenever I watch a video(for example "Num3rs", in divX/xvid format) located on the ACER hard disk, every 1-2min the video(and the audio) is lagging for 1-5 seconds. In a 50min video clip this happens like 30-40 times and it's really annoying.

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you

Check the Ad-hoc QoS. Make sure WMM is on (wi-fi multimedia)

    Whats the ping like anyway?

Thanks for the replay, but honestly I have no idea how to do that :)

QoS protocol is installed no idea how to monitor it...by the way what do you mean by 'check it'? I cannot find WMM on/off option anywhere..isn't that just for routers?

Ping from ACER to ASUS = 0% loss ; time=1ms
Ping from ASUS to ACER = 100% loss ; time=N/A <----now this is new...

Just tried to share a folder on the ASUS - "The data is invalid"

Maybe I should try to set up a new wireless network...

Device manager > Your Wifi card > Advanced

You should see all sorts of settings here like Ad hoc power management, QoS and channels.

Yes set up a fresh wireless network first..

Yeah I'm an idiot, just yesterday I pointed an OP in another thread to the 'Advanced' of the wireless card...

Ok WMM on the ACER is enabled, but I'm afraid that the ASUS doesn't support it. The lag is still present.

    ACER Advanced
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Property - Value
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
802.11b Preamble - Long And Short
    Map Registers - 256
    MFP - Disable
    Network Adress - Not Present
Power Save Legacy Algorithm - PS Poll
    Power Save Mode - Maximum
    Power Save Policy(Background)- WMM
Power Save Policy(Best Effort) - WMM
    Power Save Policy(Video) - WMM
    Power Save Policy(Voice) - WMM
    Scan Valid Interval - 60
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    ASUS Advanced:
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Property - Value
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    CoalesceBuffers - 32
    IBSS_G_Mode - Enable
    IBSS_PureG_Mode - Disable
    NotRpt11bAPIfUse11gRate - Enable
    Preamble Mode - Auto
    ReceiveFrameDescriptors - 32
    TransmitControlBlocks - 32
    Use_G_Mode_in_Usb1.1 - Disable

Update: I set up a new wireless connection but with same problems, apparently I'm doing it wrong. The Asus can't 'see' the ACER when trying to ping it - ping timeout 100% loss - but CAN see and open all the shared folders and files, and CAN use the Shared internet connection...just cannot ping it.

    Solved.

I created a new wireless network this time in Vista(I'm dual-booting with the ACER) and now it works great no lag whatsoever. I don't get it either but it works :)
    Thank you for your help.
