It probably needs a password to connect. Look at the WiFi router and see if you can find any stickers with numbers, letters, etc that could be a password. Try them out and see if that helps. Worst case, you'll have to contact Verizon to have them tell you how to get the password.

we didnt need a password to set up at all, overseas tech support thinks it may be a conflict between our router and the hp notebook, but any other brand will connect no problem, this is the second hp we have had wireless problems with.

Make sure your router isn't firewalling your computer out. You might want to try out connecting to a public hotspot(s) to make sure it's not your computer.

Make sure you are not MAC filtering in your router. On your Averatec make sure the wireless connection is set for AP only. Do not need it trying to connect to your HP while it is trying to connect to the router, set your HP the same. This is located in the advanced section. If the AP in the HP is a 11n, set to 11g or 11b/g. Once you get a open connection to work, then setup WPA. It's not safe to have open system in the time and age. Change the SSID and add a simple password. If you use a wizzard, most generate a key to transfer to other nb, via usb pin drive or floppy.
