Im trying to get the best possible coverage all over the house and ive got two WRT54GL routers configured as access points with tomato so far, but id still need another one to fully cover it. Since id have to get a cable through another wall to put a third AP in the right spot i was thinking maby just put an extender there instead.
Anyone have expirience how well these things work - how good a signal you get and how the speed is?
I was looking at the Linksys RE1000 to be more specific.

How big is your house? How may floors is it and where are the router located? Also, router technology has came a long way since the WRT54GL. Have you thought about getting a new Dual Band router that may have the capability of covering your entire house depending on it's size.

Its 2 floors and each a length about 40m and width of 15m to cover. Im pretty limited where i can put routers becouse of the existing wiring. One is on the first floor in roughly the middle and the other in the outer room on one side of the length on the second floor. I now need another on the other side of the length of the second floor and the cheapest option would be a wireless extender so i was wondering how good that one is so i dont have to spend more on a decent N router (and i kinda like tomato).

That's odd that your routers aren't able to provide full bars throughout your house. I have one N900 sitting on my first floor of my 3 story house and there isn't a room that I don't get full bars.

I think I saw that you were getting a NAS which a new router will also benefit. That is one of the main reasons I just purchased the N900. It has the fastest throughput out of any consumer router on the market. Uploading large files such as movies took about 10 minutes with my old router. Now they take less than 1 minute. With my old router, I was stuck at uploading one movie at a time. If I tried to upload more, it would drop the speeds down significantly. That doesn't happen with the N900.

Sorry I don't have any wireless extenders to recommend as I have never used one.
