While I'm on my wireless network at home, every once and a while my dv1000 seems to drop and reaquire the signal- eg. my AIM will sign off and then right back on and my Firefox slows down. This is not an issue of range, as it does it twenty feet away and forty feet away. I have a D-Link wireless router, and before I had my HP, I did have similar sporadic problems, but not near as frequent. What do you think? Do I have a shoddy router, or does my laptop have a problem right out of the box?

Have you updated the router firmware lately? It might just be that it needs an update to communicate better with newer cards. You can also update the firmware on your wireless card.

Thanks Brian

Seems to have been the trick. -
Well, very good. If it ends up failing later, it's probably a compatibility issue that might be fixed with future firmware updates or switching routers.

HP did have an issue with their older units where the new driver caused a similar issue. Their solution at the time was to revert back to the older drivers. You're issue is most likely a driver issue. What WLAN card do you have ni your system? If it's an Intel 2200 or 2915 are you using the drivers from the HP site or from the Intel site? Intel has a much newer driver set for their 2200 & 2915 cards.
Here's the link to the lastest Intel WLAN drivers for XP:
http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm
These are the drivers I'm using in my nx8220 that has the Intel 2200BG WLAN card and I don't have any issues with it. I do get the little popup bubble on the system tray to say that the WLAN is connect, but that's because of SP2. It happens on a desktop as well using an SMC WLAN card after upgrading to SP2, but I don't get disconnected.
