Wireless Display

So are there any good products in order to display my laptop on my tv wirelessly. I've heard of WiDi and was wondering if this was now the standard technology and what are the best products that take advantage of this technology? My laptop does not have WiDi built in so are there adapters for the laptop as well as the TV. I'm hopefully looking for products that will continue down the road so if my next laptop has WiDi built in it will still be able to connect to the adapter for the TV.

You can get WiDi by replacing the wireless card.

 

For Intel's WiDi solution, requires all the following, the Intel graphics (at least the HD series or later) and an Intel Wireless card (such as the 1000/2000/6000 series), a WiDi ready TV or receiver (such as Netgear Push2TV 3000).

There are other companies (Asus and Broadcom) has their own unique solution (requires only a transmitter and receiver) which unfortunately don't advertise as much as Intel's.

 

Do you guys see WiDi as becoming the standard technology in the future, with most laptops and tv's supporting this feature out of the box. I just ask because I think it would be cool to someday be able to wirelessly connect a lot of my devices and the less I have to mix and match technology the better.
Also have you guys seen or used this technology? How does it look? Not too bad on lag?
Also are there any USB adapters for laptops or such that would work, or would I really have to replace the wireless card? I have an envy 14 btw.

Nope, not for awhile.

Even wifi isn't standard on TV's yet.

Depends what card is on the Envy 14, Intel cards aren't uniformly standard on retail models. Only HP Intel CTO usually get Intel cards.

 

Looks to me like miracast will probably become the standard in the future. They are trying to make it compatible with widi though so theoretically if u buy widi equipment now it should still work with miracast later.

What is the asus version of wireless display? My laptop doesn't have an intel video card so widi just won't work.

I think your envy 14 has everything you need unless the wireless card isn't intel. One way to check is by downloading the free belarc advisor program which when run tells you everything your computer has.

Last I checked you could buy an intell wireless card for $13 on amazon discluding mailing costs. It's super easy to install-at least on my computer. If you don't know how, go to YouTube and see if you can find a tutorial for your computer. My local elicit tonics store told me intel does not make external wireless adapters. He could be wrong but I haven't been able to find any myself.

 

Nah, I don't see WiDi going anywhere. Why spend ~$100 on the receiver box when you and I can get a HDMI cable for $6 or so? (Well, in my case, a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable).

I've seen a display model at a local Bestbuy, and it looks alright. Besides being wireless, it doesn't look all that different from having the laptop hooked up to the TV physically.

 

Has anyone actually tried and succeeded at making a computer widi compatible by replacing the wireless card (assuming the graphics card and processor are already compatible)?

I was told that even replacing the wireless card won't work by an intel tech at intel's website (see link below). He says pre-approved widi laptops have software you need as well which you can't get unless your laptop was widi certified (which will certainly not be the case if you have to replace a wireless card). I do wonder if he's wrong about that but it looks like he's right to me after searching on the intel website for the software/drivers.

These apps are part of the Pro-Set pack when you download drivers with apps from Intel.

I haven't tested it but it I call BS on this one. In my opinion it should work.

 

I'll give it a shot and see what happens. I don't see why it shouldn't work either unless intel specifically programs widi to work with specific laptop models just for proprietary reasons (to force you to buy intel brand).
