    Wireless Connection Spiking every few minutes

    So heres the story (for a shorter more to the point thing go below), approximately 2 weeks ago I noticed that my internet started spiking severly, to the point where my even web browsing would lag then connect, you can simply imagine how horrible it would have been for gaming. I first thought this was a modem problem and contacted my provider (Rogers) to fix the problem. They assumed it was a problem on there end and told me they would get someone to check the server lines. However after a couple of days they told me that it was infact the modems problem itself so I made the trip to get a replacement. The problem still persisted so I thought it was an internal problem so I replaced my intel 6230 for a Intel 6300.

    (Issue at hand) When I replaced my wifi card it was working fine the first couple of minutes then the problem rose again. Watching videos opening browsers etc are right now completely fine but if it comes to gaming the lag spikes make it unbearable to do anything. Even in downloading theres a drop in speed every odd minute that shows in the graph.

    How do I fix this problem? Its been bugging me intensely and I'd love to get rid of it once and for all.

    Try your internet with a wired connection, that will help pinpoint the issue.

    When its connected via wire the internet seems to be perfectly fine. What do you mean by pinpoint the issue via wired connection?

    Tijo probably meant it would help troubleshoot the problem. :)

    It could be the router's wifi and all the interference you are receiving. Would you have a spare computer to test out the wifi speed? Check your speeds at Speakeasy - Speed Test. Also run inSIDDer to check for wifi interference.

    If connection through wire is fine, that means your problem is with the wireless (adapter/router settings or interference) and not with the internet connection this is what i meant by pinpointing what is the cause of the issue.

    Anyways, now it's time to go through the usual:
    How far away from your router are you
    What are the power settings for your wireless adapter
    Are your drivers up to date
    Which band are you using 2.4 or 5GHz
    Did you use inSSIDer to check for other wireless networks in range of your computer
    Are you using any other kind of wireless equipment, i.e.cordless phone

    How far away from your router are you
    Approximately 6~8 metres (its the next room), I have 5 bars so signals not the problem I think.

    Yes, they are from the official website.

    Did you use inSSIDer to check for other wireless networks in range of your computer
    I'm not completely sure what your asking by this question because its the first time using inSSIDer but if you mean by other networks I can connect to besides my own there are approximately 10+. If your talking about how many other networks interfere with my channel I believe around 5~7.

    Are you using any other kind of wireless equipment, i.e.cordless phone

    No, there are no wireless devices other then cellphones.

    Yes, that was the idea by using inSSIDer, the more networks are in range of you with overlapping channels, the more likely you are to get interference.

    By power settings, i mean in your adapter properties and power options, the wi-fi can be set to minimize power consumption which results in weaker connections. We've come across cases where the features had to be disabled completely for it to behave. Also make certain the transmit power in the adapter settings is set to highest.

    Can you post a screenshot of what you see on inSSIDer? If there are many networks overlapping on adjacent channels, it can cause the type of problems you're describing.

    6-8 meters is far enough, being very close to a router (< 6ft) can actually be problematic.

    You might have to check the wireless configuration on your router as well.

    Ah, I see I put both on maximum performance now.
    As for the inSSIDer picture its here

    I thought I should also mention that I removed my modem(also a router) to another location and for some reason it works better then ever, no lag spikes etc. Could the lag spikes have been caused by the cable outlets themselves? Is it possible? I'm thinking of calling a technician to check it out...

    If there was some form of interference, moving the modem might have done the trick and it also did a hard reset. If you haven't done so already, i'd set your network to use channel 6 as it is the less crowded one. If you don't want to touch anything since it's working that's fine too ;).

    I guess I'd rather make sure it doesn't conflict in the future. Hopefully once I change the channels it'll make things better permanently.

    Yes, changing location worked for me in the past as well--from basement to upper floor. Glad it's working for you now.

    hi guys, im new here today

    I hava a similar problem, im with a certain fiber obtic service and i havnt had no problem at all untill i upgraded to 50mb with the super hub. i started to get disconnections at irregular times, i might be on my xbox or laptop, im usually wireless due to normaly receiving 49mb with a ping of 25-35 and an upload of 4.50 ish, but in the last month my download has been showing very strange fluxuations in speed, from 4mb- 8mb- 12mb- and these are tests done one after the other. i cant find the problem anywere, ive rang my company sevral times and they blamed the websites themselves and said my connection was fantastic however it hasnt changed.

    Infact even trying to sign into my router is a pain it takes a donkeys age just for it to log i, im wired now as ive been trying to change channels ect and havnt as yet been disconnected, ive downloaded inssider but im not to sure how to use it? ive changed my channels, my 2.hz - 5 hz ect 300mb - 145 ect still the same, im very dissapointed and starting to give up lol. one thing i did notice is when im playing battlefield 3 and im doing well and theres alot going on around me ect im more likely to get the wireless loss for a minute or so im not sure if this is some sort of overload?

    my modem was only a few feet from my xbox as the modem was in the alcove and my tv's infront of the window, i have moved my modem now to the other alcove but havnt tryed the my xbox yet. could it just be my router is funked?

    What I found out with my problem was that the cable outlet was messed up so I called the companies technician and there coming by tomorrow but I've found that some areas have a better output then other areas in my house. Try moving the modem/router around and see if your more stable.

    Another bull excuse (pretty sure there making it up maybe its true) that I've heard from my company is that when you first setup your modem/router they make that outlet output the best signal possible for whatever your using (cable tv, internet etc) So that could have been the cause of my problem but I find that hard to believe when I moved it 4 months ago when they first came and the problem started occurring 3 weeks ago.
