    Hi all,

I am getting a new notebook soon! WOOT :D

What I wanted to ask about was Wireless Broadband.

I don't want to be paying for broadband in the home as well as broadband for the notebook when I am out.

ATM I am paying $80 for my OPTUS Broadband, this gives me a packaged deal of 7 gig download in peak times and 14 gig download in offpeak times per month.

What I want to know is, is there a way to tap into my current ADSL at home with my notebook when I am out? and how fast could it be?

I have heard you need wifi cards or something, and that they can cost anywhere from $200-$400, and even then... if I am in a bad area I still might not get any coverage. This bothers me because I mainly want it for work, I do night shifts two nights a week, and once I pass a certain time, the time in mine to do what I want with it. So if I can play BF 2142, for an hour or two before bed then I want to :)

I have looked at wireless internet, but they all want huge $$$ for small downloads and small speeds  .

    What are my options?

    Hrrmmm,

Ok then, well, what would people recommend? say I wanted to to budget for the net $80 a month, could I find an even medium of broadband at home with a fair amount of download and a even amount for the notebook when I am out and about...

What are all you guys doing? :p

You're not going to get what you are looking for at anything close to that cost, not in the U.S. at least. At work we use Verizon's high speed mobile option (I think it is EV-DO, but I don't really keep up with this technology). Speed is acceptable for basic browsing and we can connect to our VPN, but application performance is pretty slow when we do. I've only done a couple of speed tests, but speed was consistently in the 500 kbps range. This is costing us about $75 per month for each connection.

If you provided your location it would be a bit easier for people to give you a run down of your options and pricing, as availability for any mobile broadband solution varies quite a bit around the U.S.

I double what the above post says, cell phone companies offer wireless that you can get anywhere you get a cell phone signal. Its not cheap, like 70$ a month however you can use it almost anywhere and its unliminted usage.

Its speeds is not bad, comparible with low/mid end dsl. I think its well worth it if your on the move alot and need it for business or something.

There is a new cell phone wireless standard on the way, surly it will cost even more... but it promises to be much faster.
