I'm about to buy a Dell Latitude D630 with the following wireless specifications:
Wireless LAN (802.11) - Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card
I'm relatively familiar with computers, but not so much with setting up a wireless home network. I know I need a broadband connection (have), a wireless router, and a wireless card (both don't have). I want to set up a home network just for my bedroom, because that's the only place I'll be using my computer. What should I be looking for and what would be my ideal costs for a wireless router and a card?

Card comes with D630.
Get cheapest non-flakey router. Probably gonna end up spending 30-40. Avoid those old Netgear G routers (like WGR614), they're flakey. -
your notebook has a wireless card or do you need a desktop one and why dont you just connect it wired no since in spending 70+ for nothing
-
The Linksys WRT54GC "compact" router is good if you just want access for a small area.
-
The Asus G1S has a wireless card too, right ?

I think I need a wireless card for the desktop, because that is where the internet is used most of the time.
Does the desktop not matter and I could just use the card that comes with the laptop along with the router?
I want to keep my desktop hooked up to the internet and bring in my laptop to hook up to that same connection, except wirelessly. -
What most people do is put the wireless router right next to their desktop, that way they can plug into it with an ethernet cord, no wireless card required.
-
Ok, so I would just need the router and would the card in the laptop connect to the router and its connection?
-
yep.

OK, so where can I find the best router at a reasonable price for what I need. I know Linkeys are well-known, but I've heard their connections are hit or miss.
Also, will my wireless card be able to work for two separate internet connections, one for college and one for home? -
-
Now, what about in regards to my wireless card working for two sperate internet connections. -
Thanks for all your help, guys.
-
Yes your card will work for two different connections, just as long as you have the right setting to connect to the network.
