Its just a matter of signal strength.
Try putting the router in space away from other electronic devices, espically microwave ovens and cordless telephones.
If that doesn't solve it check the wireless card drivers are upto date on the laptop.
Hope that helps -
Wireless signals can get mixed performances going from room to room. I know at my friend's house, you can get wireless all throughout the downstairs area. As soon as you take 5 steps up the stairs, the bars all the sudden disappear. It is garbage.

Router and wifi card brands please!

Anyway, to the OP all I shall suggest is placing the Router as high as possible off the ground.
PS: Walls have a lot to do with wireless signals! -
I had a roomate before and he had the same problem with our wireless router because his room is a floor below ours. The solution? He had to use a long ethernet cable.

A more expensive but more aesthetic solution is to get a pair of PowerLine adapters. They allow you to send an Ethernet signal through the wiring in the building. Just plug the two powerline adapters, source and destination, and plug in your laptop's network cable. Provides up to 200Mbps connection.
