Warning: I'm not down with networking lingo.
Im looking after someone elses house, and they have set up a router for us to use their broadband connection. From what I know the router is wirelessly connected to their home network, and we are just to plug the router into our laptops when we want to use the internet. This works fine on this laptop, no worries. However, when I try do the same thing on another laptop I can't get internet access, it just stays at "Local - Identifying". Laptops are Vostro 1500 and HP Presario v6000, both running Vista Home Prem.

Since you're not "down" with the lingo, let's just try to get some more facts as painlessly as possible. :D

Can you open a command console window on the system that won't connect, and run "ipconfig /all" (just remove the quotation marks before doing so). To get the console window, you should be able to click on the "Start" button from the desktop, then go to the menu item called "Run..." and then type "cmd" (again, without the quotation marks) in the box that opens up, and hit the Enter key).

Once you've run the ipconfig/all command, take a screenshot of the results and attach the pic to your post so we can see what sort of IP configuration your system has (to do the screenshot, hold the shift key down and hit the key that says something like "Prt Scr", then go into MS Paint, paste the screen shot into a new MS Paint document, then use the selection tool to just select the view of the command console window with the results and then copy that selection, open a new MS Paint document, paste the bit you selected into that new document, and then save as a JPEG).

Haha just the once. Then I realised I didn't have the cable plugged in. Retried though, still got the same amount of "stuff". How do I set your TCP/IP settings to automatically obtain? I'd assume it would be in internet options, but on both computers its not showing as a connection. I can see it in Network Connections, and noticed that on this lappie (working) the connection says it is Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Conroller, while on the other lappie (not working) its shown as nVidia Nforce Network Controller? Hope this helps....if it does you are magic.

VICTORY!! :D Had to change it to Obtain IP Automatically. Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure it wasn't selected because a mate changed it when we were trying to set up a 3-person LAN.
+rep for the both of you.
