    Can I connect a Wireless Router to a LAN Router?

    Presently, my LAN consists of an Actiontec (R1542SU) DSL Gateway and a Netgear GS116 switch. This is an older Actiontec (it has provision for a wireless card, but I do not intent to obtain one) and 4 LAN ports. My basic question is, can I connect a WAN Router to it?

    Ultimately, I'd like to disable the firewall in the Actiontec Gateway - so I can have a few ports available outside the firewall - and connect my switch after the WAN router (I'm think of the Linksys WRT-54GL or GS for example which also has 4 LAN ports). So I'd have:

    Gateway -> PCs outside Firewall
    Gateway -> WAN Router

    WAN Router -> Switch -> PCs
    WAN Router -> Wireless PCs

    Would this work?

    Thank you,

    Kevin

    If you have all the equipment, I dont think it would hurt to try it out.

    Are you trying to run two different networks or one with a intranet?

    harpreet1988 - I do not presently have a Wireless Router - I'm attempting to determine what to buy.

    Reezin14 - one network with an internet (at least that is what I think I want).

    I envision the network as a collection of nodes on a tree, with each node containing a switch (one port on the internet side 'x' ports on the LAN side).
    My Actiontec Gateway is 1-DSL-in/4-LAN-out, my switch is 1-LAN-in /16-LAN-out - works great. I view this as one network with internet.

    The Wireless Routers that I've been looking at have 1-LAN-in/4-LAN-out plus "a bunch" of WAN-out. If I connect this to my Gateway, is this still one network with internet? Will this work?

    Ultimately, I'd like to disable the firewall in the Gateway (use one port for the Wireless Router with 3 ports outside the firewall), connect the Wireless Router (with firewall enabled) to the Gateway and connect my 16 port switch to the wireless router. My hope is that I end up with one network with 3 ports outside the firewall and 16+3 LAN ports plus the WAN nside the firewall - does this make sense? Will this work?

    Thank you!

    (I attempted to sketch what I had in mind in my original post, but I was not able to use spaces in my text "art").
