Hey guys, having trouble connecting to the internet through vista (using my old comp right now). i have a router, but have changed the WEP key from 1 to 2 and have a different channel. How do I access and change those properties, as I can't find it right now

if your sayin that you used to connect with the vista pc, then you changed the WEP key and your vista machine cant connect, then try this...

    Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Networking and Sharing Center

Now on the left hand panel click on Manage my Wireless Networks

Remove the network setting that is in there (click it once, then click remove).

Now try connecting to your wireless now...

no this computer is new and i'm trying to connect it, Windows Vista by the way. I have finnally found out where the key is but still doesn't connect. I changed teh WEP key to 2 which is what is set on the router. However it still does not connect. It connects, but says it has limited access. It has no internet right now. Anyone ahve any idea?

It sounds like you changed the channel of the router ??? Do you mean WPA2. You need to enter the networkkey on your new notebook.

I don't think so, it says WEP on the router and on the comp. I'm connected to right now. The channel is different than the default but it is a WEP.

WEP is encryption so others can't use your wireless network illegally.Have you enter this?(you'll need to keep this to connect) Try clicking the wireless icon and when prompt enter it.

Yes, I have entered the WEP when asked and changed the channel and the key to 2(which is what is on my router). No idea why it still doesn't work. Could it be because my wireless card is set to recieve only from a N network right now rather than a a/b/g one?

I can connect to the internet sometimes now, but sometimes it just doesn't connect. When is doesn't connect, it says that it is connected to the router but has no access to the internet (the wireless console says limited connection). Does anyone know wahts up with that. Could it also be that my router is set to only allow two computers to use wireless and if their is a third, it will be disabled?

Unless you set it up to use only 2 ip's, then no most router are capable of having more than 3 connections. If you've WPA security encryption try changing to that, it seems to work better with vista.

Also try updating your drivers for the wireless card and router if possible.

What do you mean, disable enable, like the switch on the laptop? Also, I have updated drivers for the card and router but still sometimes just loses it. I'll try to change it to WPA, forg, keep me updated on this to see if it works for you.

yup I switch off/on the wireless button on the side of the laptop. I already tried downloading the latest driver for my atheros card. Still the same thing. I will try to reposition my routers and maybe change the channel. Thanks for your hep :)

On Vista, changed the port settings to use use IP4 only, disable IP6. Vista Prefers a WPA(2) connection over any other type. What router are you using, and how old is it. Have you downloaded the latest drivers for it.

Can it see the router? and just can not connect to it. What distance are you from the router?
