    Hi Guys,

hope someone can shed some advice as to what to try to get this machine to behave.

Windows XP Toshiba Satellite L25 with Atheros AR5005G wlan
    -running SP3
    -Microsoft Security Essentials

    Issue:
Connects to hotel wifi, but will not surf. Ocassionally will give limited connectivity message.

Should note we have two other machines that connect fine, one running Windows 7 the other Vista.

    Things i've tried:
uninstalling the adapter & letting XP detect & reinstall
    new drivers
    turning off power saving mode
    enabling netbios over tcp/ip
    disabled windows firewall
    reset internet explorer

(last two were suggestions from another forum)

Hope someone will be able to help me it's driving me crazy. It was connecting & working fine @ home.

    For starters;

    * Has it ever connected to the Hotel's wireless and *worked*?

    * When it 'connects' to the wireless, open up command prompt and do a ping to say google.com. Do you get replies, or timeouts?

    * While 'connected' to the Hotel's wireless open up command prompt and do a ipconfig /all and hit enter. Looking at the Wireless NICs IP configuration what are you getting for an IP address? It's not 169.254.X.X right? What about the DNS IP?
From the sounds of it; it seems the Hotel's Wirelessout router is not handing a proper IP Address configuration to the laptop. This could be due to a mismatch with the 'WiFi Encryption'. Are you positive you're inputting the Encryption Key correctly. Triple verify!

there is no encryption the network is open, it hasn't been able to connect since we've been here, but all the other laptops do

it's getting an ip address (checked in ipconfig)

    and it pings google

    :S

or at least it was, (pinging google is no longer working) I think i've just made it worse following this guide to repair winsock and the last part failed. had to repair winsock with another application :S

Try using the Google dns (8.8.8.8) and (8.8.4.4) and do a ipconfig /flushdns
