Im new to this forum and didnt see this section before I posted this in the acer notebook forum. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=185894
Well I bought a wireless router Belkin 54-G router,And it does decent with just bringing up pics,or text. But when trying to watch I vid on youtube or listen to streaming music it doesnt do well at all.
Im new to all of this including the notebook,I bought the cheap acer one because I cought the big wal mart sale. So im not sure if its the notebook or the router,or just the combination of the two?
So for my last attempt on getting this thing running right,im going to return the router and buy the "N" class router as it says its faster? Think this would fix my problem with vids and music?
If so what do you guys think the better router is,I think I only have the choice between Belkin or Linksy?

Belkin is OK, and so is Linksys, but I've heard negative comments about both (my Linksys drops connections frequently). That being said, you may want to make sure you don't have the same problem going hard-wired, because I've never had a problem on my Inspiron 5100 watching/listening to streaming media via wireless. You may also want to try visiting a wireless hotspot to see if you have the same problem.

Keep in mind that, unless your Acer has an "N" wireless card, you're not going to be able to even connect to an "N" router, let alone take advantage of the speed boost.

Where would I look to see if my card supports it?
Im doubting it does since its like the lowest in the acer line of notebooks.
I tried it hard wired and it was fine.Think it could just be the quality of the built in wireless card in the notebook and not the router?
Are they replaceable? or any other options?

Check the notebook's spec sheet. That should say if the card support G (normal), A (better), or N (best) standards. N routers are not backwards compatible, so I wouldn't suggest buying an N router unless you're sure it will work.

I have yet to find a belkin router that worked more that a month. The model you have is one of the worst.

I no longer like linksys products due to the stuff sisco did after buying them. Personally I like Dlink, Buffalo and Netgear, even though netgear gives you limited support. I would not buy an 11n unless it was a dual band and had v2 firmware. Actually I would wait till the spec was finalized + 6mo. Unless your nb is equiped with 11n I would save you money.

What kind of download speed did you get? 1.5-2Mb/sec is max for a 11g. The last router I bought was the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Gould cheap router that can run dd-wrt firmware.

thain, 11n is backward compatable to 11g. With the firmware still in BETA, some works better than other. I don not know where you got you info from, but that is a requirement for the 11n spec.

    G gets speeds up to 54 Mb/s (6.75 MB/s). B is the one that only gets 1.5 - 2 MB/s (11 Mb/s = 1.375 MB/s).

Im not sure,,but when I do the speed test on speak easy site It wont even finish. It will go to 6mb download speed then just reduce to 1.5 then just stop.
I ahve yet to download and game demos or anything of that nature because it wont continue,it just stops.

Thain, those are not real numbers. Theory maybe. but not real life after you add overhead you only have a 24-30mbps. The best I ever saw for 11g was 3MB/sec. avg is what I stated.

So is it possible to do the stuff Im talking about like viewing videos and listen to streaming music with a wireless G router? Or must I have a N class router?
What im going to do is just return this for a refund and buy a good router.
My only needs are just basic goofing around on the notebook,I would like it to reach outside on the patio so range is important, and I also will be running my desk top and xbox 360 off the router "hardwired"
So please tell me what to buy for my needs?

I've just set up a newly released TRENDnet Wireless N Gigabit Router
TEW-633GR, and I've never been more impressed with performance than with this unit. I've used Linksys and Belkin for almost a decade, but this one rules them by a long shot. It's a cinch to set up and configure, and with other systems surfing the net and another playing CSS there is no lag whatsoever, this is really an outstanding unit, with great security features as well, I highly recommend it! :)

    IT'S FIXED!!!!
I took back the other Belkin router, and picked up a D-link router and it is 100% better! Before I couldnt listen to streaming music,or watch a video. Now I can do both at the same time. I am very pleased so far,So I cant boast about the D-link product just yet as its only been on for 20 minutes. But I can say Do not buy Belkin router. In all fairness I only purchased one of there routers, they might have some other good stuff,or maybe the higher "pricey" end models might be good,But after the product I bought I think its safe to say I wont be buying anything with the Belkin name on it.
Thanks for all your help guys.

Glad to hear that, Belkin routers are terrible IMO.
