Hey, i have searched this forum and found a few posts on this, but I have not really managed to sort it out on my laptop ( whatever i do, it doesnt work ).

I'm new to this place, but will probably be around more often as i find a few answers here.

I use my laptop ( Dell inspiron 1525 ) to connect to my home wifi network, and my girlfriends home network. My home network needs to have " obtain IP address automatically " and automatic DNS server. My girlfriends needs a defined IP, and DNS server. The problem is, when set up for her house, the network will not work at home, and vice versa, it gets very irritating changing it all the time.

The laptop is on Vista Home premium. I have tried using the "alternate settings" to no avail, as then it will not connect to my girlfriends at all ( hers has to be the alternate one as if i tick chose IP address and DNS server, the alternate tab dissapears! )

Not really sure how to go about doing this... I can change any network settings at home I need to, just not at the girlfriends house. Is there a quick and easy way you can suggest?

    Thanks so much
    Steve

Do you have any experience writing batch files? If nothing else, you should be able to write two little scripts that use the command console commands to reconfigure the wireless adapter - one to configure it with a static IP and DNS server, the other to configure it for DHCP. That or you could just ingratiate yourself with your girlfriend by buying her a new router. :D

Why not change her network to DHCP. Normally the static (provided by isp) can be entered into the router, then run DHCP on your local lan.

haha buy her a new router, i like that suggestion. Nah i would go changing settings etc but she lives with her dad, who works in networking, and is a bit tight with stuff like that because he wants all the security / mac filtering / this that and how he wants it... so I wouldn't go and argue with him. I did make batch files, but they were only to the extent of "Net send * hehe ".... to wind up all the teachers on the whole school network, but thats as far as it goes, i knew the rename command aswel to rename all files in a directory. I'll have another look at the alternate settings when i go over there again, maybe i typed something in wrong but it just wouldn't work,..
    Cheers
