    I have a Dell Studio xps 1645 with a i7 720Q, Intel Wifi Link 5300, Bluetooth 370. OS : Windows 7 64 bits
About 2 days ago, I lost my internet connection. I get an ERROR message "wireless needs to be turned on"? Well, I didn't turn it off? I am wondering how it got turned off or maybe the led on the card is gone??

I have been working on and off for days on this when I have a moment. I am able to connect using LAN.
I have noticed that the Wifi light does not come on. I checked the Bios upon startup in F2 and wireless is enabled.
The Windows Mobility Center has the wireless there, but it turned off. I am not able to click to change to turn it on. The button is not available.

I reloaded the Intel wireless drivers again on their website. I still have the same issue. This is so weird. I noticed that Intel has a connection 2 which is a virtual wireless adapter.. not sure what this is for?
I do not have a switch on the laptop to turn on the wireless.
What software is disabling the Wifi??
I am going nuts trying to fix this problem.   It has really got me stumped. Anybody else having this issue? Or is this a hardware problem.
I would appreciate any inputs.. thanks, Jenny

Try going to the VWA connection 2, right click and click disable, then see what happens, maybe even reboot, see if this works.

Seems you did basically all you should to try to get it to work. Sounds like a defective Wireless NIC to me.

I too have a new 1645 with the intel 5300 card and it works most of the time but sometimes it will crash the router (linksys wrt54g v 2.1) I have talked to dell replaced the cable modem, replaced the router with another wrt54g and updated the drivers from intel as dell doesn't even list that card as being installed in my computer. They are sending me a replacement card monday to try but their best guess was to replace the entire computer with another 1645. This machine is new (exchange from xps m1530) and i don't want to chance a refurbished machine besides i don/t think the machine itself is defective.
any thoughts or things to try would be appreciated

is your error in the intel wireless manager sying your hardware switch is turned off?

FN+F2 is your answer generally on dell laptop it's the switch to turn hardware radio on and off

the bios option is more drastic as in you can'T turn it back on even when pressing FN+F2 whe it's off
