I'm a completely wifi n00b, I must get a router and a card to make an wireless network, in the end will be something like that:

    Upper Floor: Notebook 1 (Compaq nx9005) + Modem + Router (D-Link DI-524???) + Wificard (Airnet AWN108???)
Down Floor: Notebook 2 (Acer 5672 with Wifi built in)

so I'm thinking about getting this router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127143 and this wificard for the Compaq: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833338015

The question is: are those 2 products a good deal? will it work? The Compaq have 2 CardBus Type II Expansion Slots, I guess that's it right?

Ohh, and a ridiculous question: after everything is installed and working, do I need to use notebook 1 as a server? Can I shut it down? I mean, if notebook 1 is off and wireless router is on and I want to play CS:S downstairs, will I have to turn the Note 1 back on? The router has it's own life? He acts has a server? He can talk to me? XD

I'm really sorry, I don't know **** about wireless and router.

    TIA

    1. The router and wireless card appear to be reasonably priced. However, D-Links quality is a little questionable (I prefer Linsys and Netgear) and I know nothing about Airnet, perhaps someone else could shed some light on that.

    2. Yes, NX9005 has Type II slots, it should work.

    3. No, you don't need to use notebook 1 as a server. The wireless router wil contiue work even with the Compaq shut down as long as it is plugged into the modem.

Most routers come with a pretty easy to follow installation guide (at least the ones I've purchased have), so I would expect that it shouldn't be too difficult to set up.

Basically your wireless router itself sort of acts like a server.

To make a long story short: you supply a connection to the router and the router routs it. Pretty simple.

I would not recomend that router, I've pulled a few of those out of installs due to very poor range. Go with a a linksys router and card.

Notebook 1 does not have to be on at all, its independent from notebook 2.

Linksys WRT54G is fine although you should consider buying both router and cardbus from the same manufacturer. And than you may want to think of WRT54GS and ie WPC54GS as PCMCIA- both of them are Speedbooster capable so it'll give you up to 35% faster connection between computers on your home network. Additional benefit is that ACER uses Broadcon WiFi chip- just like Linksys- and it's also SpeedBooster capable. What's more all of those are WPA2 capable with hardware AES support and that's the best wireless security available.

    Regards

There is a bit more to it so if you interested in this config, just let me know- I don't wanna get in to details if it's not the right setup fot you.

I don't know, it's a little expensive, and I think I don't need that 35% extra speed, is 35%+ of how much anyway? My ****py ADSL connection don't get any higher speed than 65 kb/s.

So 150kb/s, safe and stable would be great, ohh, and cheaper as possible hehe. ;)

Well you may buy WRT54G anf flash it with DD-WRT wich will enable SpeedBooster- that would be cheaper. 35% of 54Mb/s- that's of internall transfer between your home computers- microsoft network. Usefull.
As for the cardbus- i'd still recommend using linksys- you would have all broadcom based devices capable of WPA2 and thats is your requested stability and security. As for the 54Mb/s it's pure theory- you will get half of it in reality co if you wanna transfer a movie from one comp to naother it'll take 5/6min for 800MB- no super speed.
