I have a gateway laptop with home xp, with a wireless card already installed. I want to install an external wifi card with an external antenna hookup. I want to hook up an 12dB external antenna. The cable between the two will be about 20 ft. Has anybody out there done this, and where would be a good place to get these items.

Are you trying to connect to some sort of point-to-point wifi system? Here's a how to guide for building one from scratch:

    http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html

You can also buy all of the components you need if you don't want to make one out of soup cans. ;) Google for "point to point wifi".

    ok, that helps.

then you're going in the right direction. you want basically what you mentioned in your first post. you can try to normal brick and mortar shops like best buy or fry's, with fry's probably giving you more options.

it shouldn't be that hard to find. you may even try browsing newegg.com to see if they have what you're looking for.

If you use a directional antenna, you'll need someone to also have a directional antenna that you will aim yours at. Since the antenna creates a beam, you can't just aim it at a wireless router and expect it to work.

    Just a little FYI.

Most have a max cable length of 9'.

You may need to refer to your manual.
