Hi, I have a Linksys WRT54GS with these problems:

    1) Occasionally disconnects and works for a while (days even) then breaks down for a few hours (max half a day)

    2) Wireless is fine but my ethernet connection to desktop does not work.

What I've done is changed my firmware to Tomato and see if anything changes but the only thing I've done so far is increase its transmission power to about 70. Could the unstability be caused from the firmware upgrade or the increase in transmission power cause it to malfunction? OR is my router ready to die and needs to be thrown away?

My ISP is Shaw. I don't know if this affects my situation but I download about 800 megabytes a day for 5 days a week. Is Shaw doing this to me?

What do you guys think about the reliability of the Tomato firmware? Should I switch back to the stock Linksys firmware?

Please answer my all my questions as I am desperate to solve or atleast know whats causing these things. Any help is appreciated/

    Thanks

I wouldn't think Shaw would give a rats butt about you downloading 800mb a day forever... thats nothing!!!!

They might depending on what's being downloaded and the patterns it generates, particularly in combination with what's being uploaded. I'd check my terms of service and, if necessary, contact the ISP to see if they're interfering with the connection.

If you have wireless and hard-wired problems, most likely there's an issue with the router. Have you read the Linksys manual and verified the configuration? Have you verified the LAN port on the computer works? It would help if you provided more information regarding error messages you have received.

Next time you lose connection, reset the router and see if this resume the connection, if not, then is Shawn.

    What is your ethernet adapter?

How old is the router? These things do have limited lifespans.

3-4 years if fine, just do what I said, next time it happens, reset the router, if you still have problems then is the ISP.
