My laptop has built-in WiFi and I want to purchase a wireless All-in-one printer. Will a WiFi printer work directly with my laptop or must I have a LAN?

well, it is possible to establish direct ("ad-hoc") wifi connections between two wifi-equipped computers, but i wouldn't expect that to be possible with a laptop and a printer. i might be wrong of course.

probably depends on the printer...you should list it.

If there is no network available, your computer will use Windows Automatic Up Configuration and give it an ip address in the 169.254.X.X range.

Your printer will not automatically give itself an ip in this range...most printers will accept an ip address from a dhcp server, and many will will allow you to set an ip address manually. If you can set your printer manually to an ip address range of 169.254.X.X, it should work (and hopefully, your laptop doesn't freakishly pick the same IP address when it starts...what are the odds?)

(note, you will still need to add the printer properly as a network printer with the preset ip address and drivers)

Good luck setting it up right, they can be really finicky.
