Alright i get the whole concept of overlapping channels and how 1, 6, and 11 are ideal...but what's the point of setting it to these channels if all your neighbors are using them too? Doesn't that make it overlap directly then? Channel 8 gets overlap from 6 and 11, i understand that, but would a direct same channel signal create more interference. I seem to get the best signal quality and speed with Channel 8, which is why i'm asking. I hope someone can help me answer this question. Thanks.

The Channels are there to make it, so it changes the frequency slightly, so it doesn't interefere with things. If there is network near by, you can see the channel of it, (if your using a different program than the windows wireless network), and if your on the same channel, you might want to switch it. Because then there will be less interference with that channel

Thanks for reply Nick. I see multiple networks around me using Thinkvantage Access Connections on my Thinkpad and all are on either 1, 6, and 11. I let my router scan for the clearest channel and it has chosen channel 8 more often than any other of the available channels during various parts of the day, so I guess I'll stick with it.

Thats fine then. The only reason why channels 1,6, and 11 are always picked is that channel 1 is set to the lowest frequency. Channel 6 is default with the router, and channel 11 is the highest frequency. Thats why they are all the most commonly picked. But go ahead, go for 8.
