I absolutely hated my intel 5100 wifi card it wouldnt get the full 300Mbps only 240-260Mbps and randomly disconnected me. I bought the intel 5300 wifi card and installed a 3rd ant and now I am getting 430Mbps and no random disconnects. Im also about 200 feet from my router. I am very happy with the 5300.

You can get 430Mbps? Could you share your wireless router brand & model?

AFAIK getting above 300Mbps requires wireless router capable of 3x3 spatial streams and I haven't seen such kind of wireless router available in the market. I've been waiting for this kind of router to replace my current wireless router for maximizing the full potential of 5300 inside one of my notebook.

Yeah, there are several routers out there but they are super expensive right now. I think the reason I cant get to 450Mpbs is that the so many versions of Draft-N. I am using the dir855x atm. I love the speed. My old wrt610n has about 100+ feet more range but not as great network speed.

Strange that I haven't seen any review mentioning that DIR-855 could really do 3x3 spatial streams, even I have turned DIR-855 product web page back and forth there's no such word mentioning that it's capable of having connections at above 300Mbps. Or is it just me that could not find it?

I think I should put this wireless router on my wish list.

Yes, sparkyman2000 is right. You should put more information.

Are you using the latest driver? Intel has just rolled out driver version 12.4.0.21 this month.

But then the problem could also be your wireless router, or it could also be just a matter of settings in your wireless router. What kind of internet connection do you have? What about other WiFi clients when you have that problem, do they have similar problem?

do yourself a favor, think LONG and hard before you purchase this router. I got one of the very first in the US last year and it had the wiring problem. It took them four months to get it worked out. THen the next release wasnt even close to the reported speeds. So they go out and release another revision leaving us all out in the cold. I went and bought that and boom, many of the same problems exist. I had to spend weeks fighting to get support to even admit their was a problem. It may sound good on paper, but thats the only place this router performs as they say it does...

The above point is great to know and at least you stuck it out for a year. Each company has its set of problems. I haven't had any problems with my dir855 x. You do have to know more than the average person on setting it up but thats the price you pay.

Probably I should wait for other manufacturers to come up with their version of 3x3 spatial streams capable wireless router.

That's an easy one - his system is set to turn off his adapter power to either save power or when it goes into sleep or hibernate. There are 2 setting points, both the Power Management setting on the adapter and the Power Plan settings in Vista for the adapter. I always have mine set to never allow the system to turn mine off.

It depends on your laptop. AFAIK, Dell is the only manufacturer that intensively using half-height form factor wireless mini PCI card for its latest laptops. Older models use the full-height form factor. Other manufacturers might have also use it, but limited in few models.

As for WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350, there are few things that you should consider before buying it, especially from eBay. From what I've seen, most eBay sellers only have the Engineering Sample of this card. You should also watch out for fake labeling to purge the ES status. And from what I've read on Intel's website, 5350 only comes in full-height form factor, while 5150 comes in both form factors. Don't know for sure in case of 5050.

Don't know for sure. At least we could have no guarantee that ES is same as final one.

I have slightly bad experience with ES Intel 5300 half-height card that I got earlier before 'the real one' that I'm currently use in my Studio 17. At first, WiFi LED was blinking upon use/wireless traffic, which I didn't really regard as problem, more useful instead as activity light. Later on, I experienced few bad connections that I've never had before when still using Dell 1510 Wireless-N card.

Once replaced with non-ES Intel 5300 half-height card, which came from Dell original parts, no more of that problem up to now. But no blinking activity light anymore.

    Hi guys,

These 5100 and 5300 Intel wifi cards at half sizes are compatible with Intel GM965 chipset?
Just checking before buying at eBay (can get for US$ 15 - 22).

I have one Compal JFT00; now has a Intel 3945ABG, but it has 3 antenna cable, so I think I can upgrade to N cards.

Yes they are compatible. I'm using 5300 with Intel PM965 chipset (Dell Studio 17). Even I use 5100 with Intel 945 chipset (Dell Mini 9).
