When both your friend and you are connected to his wireless, and he can get onto the internet, do both your ipconfig /all readouts look the same, except for the last number in your IP addresses?

could be that you've mistyped the security key, or he might have MAC filtering on.

Mac filters are special devices on routers and other up to date technology that filter out any Mac computers because they are obsolete. lol.

Just kidding but anyways Your computer has a MAC address that is unique to your computer much like a home address, and MAC filtering only allows, well allowed MAC addresses to access your router. And are you on a different computer, or how did you post this if your internet doesn't work?...

Yeah I'm on my friends computer. How would I make my computer a compatible MAC address?

EDIT- Okay we reset the lynksys and modem and it worked.

Be aware that MAC filtering sometimes makes things worst. I tried it in my network with two wireless connections, and I lost communication.

MAC filtering is a GREAT security method... as long as you know what you're doing it won't cause any problems.

NOT, it's to easy to spoof. You can use it along with real security like WPA2, but by it self it's not security. It like locking the door when you leave and leaving the key in the door. Most of the newer drivers have a place to enter any MAC value you want. Just lunch Netstumbler and see how the nodes are identified. It's a free utility that is used for site surveys.

I agree, MAC alone is not a good security. And Netstumbler doesn't work with all systems, it doesn't work with mine.

I didn't say alone it's great security, but even pairing WEP and MAC filtering will keep out most "road warriors," and WEP is a horrible encryption method. WPA2, which is like impossible to crack and MAC filtering is how I set up all my business clients (doctors, etc) who need the security. I stand by my post.

As with any security the more layers you have the better it gets.
