I just got an i9300 today and I am trying to configure a router. But my ethernet connection doesn't work unless it is connected when the computer is turned on. In other words, I cannot disconnect the modem and then connect the router without restarting the computer. Can anybody tell me how to keep the ethernet connection "hot" while plugging and unplugging cords without restarting?

i'm confused. can you reword your question and what steps you are taking and what you're trying to do?

you should not have to turn anything off or on. you should be able to plug/unplug the ethernet cable and be recognized and given an IP address (assuming you're running dhcp).

it may take a couple seconds or more, but you don't need to power anything off/on.

as a last resort you can start/run/"command"...

ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew (you can also just do ipconfig/renew)

If you want to avoid the command line. Right click the wireless on the right of your task bar. Then click repair.

You're not by any chance using aol software are you?

The router setup asks that the computer be connected directly to the internet through the modem first. After checking the connection, then it asks to connect the router between the computer and the modem. My problem is that my i9300 does not connect through its ethernet port unless the ethernet cord is connected at start up. I cannot just unplug and replug in an ethernet cord and be connected. So, when I unplug the ethernet cord from the computer, plug it into the router and then run another ethernet cord from the router to the computer to finish the setup, I have no ethernet connection. Is this a problem with my computer and its ethernet connection?

Its the router to me. When Windows finds a new ethernet cable hooked up, it sends a DHCP request to something (anything), hoping to get a response back. That is why I think it is your router.

It sounds like the power saving option is on and it is turning off your ethernet card. I think it is part of quickset. Have the ethernet plugged in then power up. Surf the net then unplug. Look for a info window pop up above the clock that says turning off ethernet adapter. I think you can click on it and change the option to never turn off. Also you can check the quickset software options. If those do not work then check start>control panel>network connections and see if the card is disabled. Your best bet is the first option.

Hey guys: Thanks for your help. When I logged onto the computer last night and went through the router setup everything worked fine. I think for some reason I needed to shut the computer down and start over. But for whatever reason, I could change ethernet cables with no problems. Thank you again for your responses. Being computer illiterate, its nice to have friends like you out there.
