    my Dell laptop has this:

    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N

i never had to set up a wireless network in my home since ive been tied down w/ a desktop up until now

    my budget is $170.00 max

and i dont really care about distance..since im gonna be in my house using it...but speed is the most important thing and i want to make the most of this Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N

and i want to still be able to have my desktop able to get online..i assume i can just plug my desktop into the new router

Check out this Linksys router. Its pricey, but has good reviews. And, its within your budget.

Will you be using it just for Internet, or also for sharing files between computers on your network? If it's just for Internet, then it won't make a difference if it's a draft N router, because Internet is much slower than even B routers (usually, depends on what provider you have), but definitely slower than G. So if it's for Internet only, save your money and get the good ol' WRT54G, I have it and it's awesome.

I don't know which N routers are good and which aren't. My bf has a Belkin N router, and it's horrible, the Internet just goes out for a minute from time to time several times a day - but not if you are connected with an Ethernet cable. (You can usually plug in as many as 4 things into wireless routers, so your desktop will be just fine.) So if file sharing is what you want, see what others have to say :)
