EEEEK I don't touch DLink in my job if i can help it. Hate the drivers and hate the build. try Cisco Linksys stuff

That will do if your on standard kind of 8mbps broadband, if your pushing ADSL2+ or your going to be far away from the router in your house then it might be best pushing for the N version

I would stay away from linksys unless it's the WRT54GL model. It has twice the ram as other models and will run the linux firmware like dd-wrt. Don't buy BELKIN if your looking for reliability, they are not. Netgear is good, Buffalo (WHR-54g or WHR-HP-G54 and some newer ones) is a good line if you can get it in ca.

NO matter what I would get I would make sure I could load the dd-wrt firmware if there was a stability problem. They have a list hardware that works with there firmware. Mostly Althos and Broadcom chip sets

Dude i'm not being funny but you're not helping the guy, you have just told him not to buy Linksys unless it's WRT54GL and dont buy belkin, instead buy either Netgear or Buffalo and ALL the above are not available on the website that he has requested.

Next time I suggest thoroughly reading through the thread before posting.

Alien, It also does no good telling him to buy hardware that is not reliable. Doing so puts him in the same boat he's in now. If he is using any p2p, BT or run multiple windows the symitonius connections come it to play very quickly. On a average it will be in the 50 for 1 user, doing normal browsing and email. If you play games or BT the connection can go over 150.

Most all hardware made will work for a short period of time with light use. Linksys use to be the std every one compare to. This is no longer the case since Sysco bought them, and tried to slip different models using the old model numbers. Case in point WRT54G v5 vs v4. Besides having the same WRT54 thats about it when it comes to performance. The only reason they brought the GL version out was the outrage and all of the bad press they got. The GS's I've worked on are junk, too. Besides needing matching hardware to use the 108mbps speed. It can not handle very many symatainous connections, one light users only, on the v7 any way. The 11n hardware seams to be good.

I've been doing support for 15+yrs and Belkin is by far the worst hardware when it come to getting a good one. I have had some that would not even power up. I went through 5 units one time before my client decide to replace it with something I recommend. Once change out, I never got another call related to his network. Which is a shame because most of the hardware tests good.

I would suggest that he goes to www.smallnetbuilder.com and read the performance and reviews. There are some very cheap routers that preform well. This site did test them, the only unkown is long term reliability. Reliability is the main reason most users buy name brand.

Just because one suggest a web site, does not always mean they will but from that one. In most cases it's a site they have done business with in the past. Once a user decides on the model then it a hunt to find the best price.

In any case most users would prefer to have hardware that work 24/7 with no issues even if it means spending a little more.

the site you ref is about 20-40% higher on it's prices on the better quality routers, so as blue noted, you may want to shop elsewhere

i can not argue his knowledge of the subject, however there are some some alternatives to the very high priced N versions
if you live in ca, you can pick up a very good refurbished N Netgear router on ebay and try it out- they go for about $30-45 and really work nice(refurbished in CA Netgear plant). You didn't say what type of security you want, but I think we all recommend wpa2, Not wep. So, in the N spec, it doesn't support anything but legacy b/g in wep, so......
