Hi,
I manage a wireless LAN and recently torrents have been by a few users causing great problems in speed and ping times for the rest of the users.
I have a router that will block certain port ranges - what ranges should I block just to prohibit p2p / torrents?
Also are there any programs that will let me track web usage of each ip address on the network (speeds, gb's downloaded etc.)? I'm using a standard wireless belkin router.
Many thanks in advance,
72oo

6890-6899 or 6990-6999 are the the ports used by p2p programs, but MANY other applications use this range too. It is high inadvisable to do this.

It's a bit hard to block P2P and Torrents because most applications allow the user to choose a random port or choose their own port

Setup a Linux router with L7 Filter.

Do I have to buy specific hardware for that or can I install it over my current router? -
Might want to give this a look.

@ WackyT:
Thanks for the link, very interesting stuff.
My situation is slightly different.
The network is exclusively used by laptops (including me) and I haven't a desktop at this location that I can use. I've heard about blocking certain ports 6800-6900 or something like that. I might have to go with this given the lack of a desktop.
Which ports to block to stop file-sharing / p2p / torrent
