I have noticed that their are different types of wireless routers, and I was wondering which one I should get,and what makes them different? I have noticed that there is a G Router, and an N Router, so which one should I get or do I need to wait for my laptop to arrive, and it will tell me somewhere on it?

All laptops will come with a G wireless card unless you specifically made an upgrade to N when you were customizing your order...

So unless you purposefully ordered one with Wireless N, you should go and buy a Wireless G router. :)

I'm not sure about that, if you haven't included a wireless card with your order, you will not get one.

For most people and applications a G router is more than enough, some people who run data hungry applications (e.g. games) within their own home network could find advantageous to get an N router.

That's true... but how many companies do you know of that would let you even get away with buying a laptop from them and NOT getting a wireless card?

Well after getting a closer look at the laptop's specs,it comes with a Integrated Intel® 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N Wireless Networking,so I guess I will be getting a N Router, and a Wireless Card was not an option for adding on to the order, but it does have a ExpressCard slot...is that the same thing?

If you have the minicard already then don't buy anything. The express card slot is just a port on the side of the laptop to allow you to connect card type devices like a sound card, a wireless card, etc. But you don't need a wireless card, it is in the laptop already.

You just need a router now, that's all.

    Belkin has many unsatisfactory reviews.

Nevertheless all depends where you live, here in the US, Netgear, Linksys and D-Link are the most popular, you won't go wrong with any of them.

Heh. I haven't had any of the routers from the current Netgear lineup, but I tried two previous netgear routers and both ended up being returned.

I've had great luck with Dlink. Both the DI-624 that verizon supplied with my FiOS and my current DIR-655 have been terrific. They are the first routers I've owned that don't need to be rebooted every couple of months.

Advice for the OP...take a look at the user reviews on Newegg.com. That'll give you a pretty good idea of which routers are troublesome, and which ones are getting good marks from average users.

    I have had Netgear in the past and never had any problems. Your decision should be driven among other by;

    1. Router review
    2. Use
    3. Budget

And I think Netgear is the best quality-price in the market.

Well, to be fair my experience with Netgear routers probably goes back to the 802.11b days, so it's likely not relevant to anything on the market today. All wireless gear was much fussier back then.

I think for the most part all the major players are putting out servicable equipment today, and while some may be better than others it's hard to really go wrong. I think that's where places like newegg can help. You can steer clear of the few actual lemons and avoid the headaches that other people have experienced.

I agree, that's why I put "router review" in number 1 of the drivers list.

Nice purchase. I'd say that's a pretty good router and that you got a decent deal too. :)

Okay one more question before I even open the router box. I am going to want to work off of the DSL service I am getting on my desktop,so will I need a DSL Wireless Router instead or will the Linksys N Ultra Range Plus Router work for that to?

Hi Melanie, you will need a DSL modem, then you will connect your DSL modem to your D-Link router, and the computer will connect into your router. Now make sure that your router has also wireless if you want to connect your computer using wireless, if it is the case, you will also need a wireless card on your computer.

You can always PM me if you need more detailed answers.
