WRT54G v4 and WRT54GL are pretty much the same thing. Avoid WRT54G v5+.

Why don't you try a site about the WRT54G?

Yea, in dragonrage is right, WRT54G v4 = WRT54GL. Any version will work for your needs (gaming) but if you plan on torrenting, go with WRT54G v5+. If you're particularly courageous, you can buy the WRT54G v4 and run a modded firmware on it such as DD-WRT and a start up script that will fix the bittorrent issue. I have a WRT54G v4 myself and it runs everything quite well (except after a bittorrent session, then I have to power down the router and turn it back on for everything to work).

If you want to upgrade to 3rd party firmwares then WRT54GL will be a better router choice. But if you don't really want to upgrade, then pick the WRT54G, but a lot of people have complaints about it with the v5 series.

I have a WRT54G version 2. I have DD-WRT installed on it and it's great, except for the bit torrent bug :(. Bit torrent works, it's just it slows HTTP down to a crawl. It is very easy to install if you follow a few simple rules and gives your router the features of a full-fledges business router that costs hundreds of dollars more.

You can find the version by looking on the back of the router.

I haven't seen any in stores since I got mine from Wal-Mart back in about March. And it was open box. That was the fourth store I tried.

If you are looking for an older version, hmm that would be a little harder. I don't think there is a way to look outside of the box to see if you have an older version (correct me if I'm wrong). If you want to get an older version, I think you can only get the older version on ebay or something. I think most of the routers now might be v6.

You can tell the version by the serial, yes. WRT54g v4 starts with CDFA. But I don't think you'll find one new in a store.

You can buy version 1, 2, 3. 3.1, or 4. You will probably have to bid for them on ebay. I have also found users selling there old routers on http://austin.craigslist.org/about/cities.html I posted a wanted for 30 dollars on craiglist and found 2 routers. Version 3.1 has a faster processor 216 mhz then the others its serial number is CDF9. Here is a list of the other routers with there serial numbers.
