    Which Dell Vostro 1400 wireless card?

    Hi All,

    These are the wireless options when buying a vostro 1400:

    Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Wi-Fi Mini Card [add $29]
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card [Included in Price]
    Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Wi-Fi Mini Card [add $10]
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card [add $50]
    Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card [add $25]

    Are they all the same? Would the Intel mini card have better battery life since it's "centrino"?

    I'm basically looking for a wireless card that can run well with linux and the best range. Also, do any wireless mini cards allow an external antenna to be attached?

    You'll get the best range with a Wireless-N card. I'm not sure what the difference is between the Intel and Dell cards. I have the Intel in my HP and so far it's working great. Your range will also vary depending on the router you buy, but N has the best range.

    Yes N has the best range, but it needs an N router. Just cuz you have an N card won't make a big difference if you only have a G router.

    But from those, I would get the Intel 3945. N is not really that big yet, it's still not the standard.

    If you have an N card, you won't be able to use it on the majority of access points out there.

    Get the Dell card and buy an Intel card off of eBay for $15. Don't pay Dell's inflated prices. You can try reselling the Dell card on eBay but you'll be lucky to get a little less than the shipping cost.
