I jus ordered a Sager 5971. I've been reading quite a bunch of reviews on draft n routers. I can't seem to make up my mind. Everytime I think I see one I like I read about sumbody who's got problems with it. The dir 655 sounds good, wish i knew when the 855 was comin. Any suggestions?

The DGL-4500 is available, and seems to be pretty much the same as the DIR-855 (with perhaps some extra QoS features for gaming use). Supports 2.4GHz or 5GHz, etc. Should cost about $179.

Ars Technica recently did a roundup of a few, and everything performed horribly except the Airport Extreme, and that's not to say the Apple part did all that well. It didn't include the DGL-4500, though.

I don't think the DGL-4500 will work for dual channel with the 4965AGN because it can't run in both 2.4 and 5GHz simultaneously.

I went with the Belkin N1. It was rated high on Cnet and i couldn't pass up lifetime warranty.

What speeds are being indicated when you connect? If its >54mbps you are on 11n. A may be indicating the bandwidth it's using 5ghz...
You will have problems with 11n draft hardware. We went through the same thing with 11g, but most don't recall all the problems. And you will continue to have some problems after the spec is finallized. Mainly because they never worked all the bugs out of 11g, now you add a 3rd one that involves 3-4 specs now. One thing you must remember the spec says if it sees a 11g hardware it can not interfere with it, no channel bonding. This is why the 5ghz is preferred, very little 11a hardware out there. -
I have the DIR-655 and Love it. This coupled with an HP dv9700t works great (has the 4659 AGN chipset) connect at 130Mbps. You need to use the Intel Proset Application along with WPA/WPA2 and TKIP with AES in order to achieve N speeds.
Not only is the N fairly speedy but with MIMO gaming over it is fairly lag free. ( hell of a lot better than G) Also, the coverage is slightly better than my modded WRT54G and the QOS functions work great for a power user. -
My 655 is great, but I can't set it to 5Ghz mode. For some reason, I can only select 2.4Ghz.
BTW, use AES, not TKIP. TKIP showed much slower performance than AES in my testing.
Copying a 1GB file from another computer:
Bytes Received per Interval:
TKIP: 2,200,000 (avg)
AES: 4,500,000 (avg) -
I've had nothing but problems trying to get working wireless with my Intel 4965 cards in our 5920G laptops. I'm tempted to contact Intel to find out exactly what Draft N version our cards are supporting.
-
Does the 655 offer 5ghz mode? I don't recall seeing it in the specs?
-
I have the dv9700t with the wireless N support. Where is the Intel Proset Application located on the PC, I cant find it...
-
I personally wanted to wait for the dual-band prices to come down and/or the final N spec to get settled and wait for true N gear, so I opted to go the cheap route. Rather than splurge for the 655 or 855, I went w/ a DIR-625 and couldn't be happier. I'm getting all the range of my Belkin Pre-N router I replaced w/ double the thru-put. I get around 40Mbs tested thruput (130Mbs reported by Windows). Love it and it was only $80. I also got the same thru-put w/ the DIR-615 ($50) but returned it (defective for other reasons) and the 625 wasn't that much more.
