I have a trendnet 432 that cost me $10- after rebates. It's 'only' a G router but I get rock steady 54 Mbps connections.

What I have found with routers under $100- is that the cheaper ones are more likely to be mucked around by other electronics. My trendnet will not function when placed within 2 meters of a TV set. Gain some distance from the TV set and all is well. The RF/IF leakage just screws it up. I've had the same experience with multiple models of Linksys and Dlink too.

At around the $100- level, the routers seem to get nice RF shields inside of the plastic body.

Depends on your needs. The DIR-655 is a rock solid 2.4Ghz router that I don't think you can beat for the price (~$90-100).

Dual-band is nice because the 5.8 GHz range generally has little interference and thus can continue to provide good speed and range in less optimal conditions. If your somewhere that already has dozens of 2.4 networks blocking everything then dual band could be good for you, but if the closest network is your neighbor 200ft away, then you’re probably wasting your time.

5.8GHz is also worthwhile if you have alot of wireless devices like mice.

D-Link DIR-655 has the best reviews on the internet.

It has performed well for me.

Personally I prefer routers which I can install a third party firmware into, such as DD WRT or Tomato.

Sites for ddwrt or tomato have lists of which routers can be loaded with the 3rd party firmware.

3rd party firmware offers features expensive routers offer as well as others which you can't find on regular routers.

I currently own a Linksys WRT54G2 loaded with DD WRT micro and I LOVE it! I'm hoping I can get a WRT54G with more memory and load it with Tomato.

So expensive for a cappy trendnet router.

    I got my 2xtrendnet 432BRP for $1.99 each from futureshop/bestbuy.

My friends and I just moved into a house, 8 people in total, 3 floors. It's an old house (109years old to be exact). we just got internet today and we're looking at wireless routers, I've had a Linksys and was very impressed with it, and am looking to continue with it. We're all college students and something on the cheap side is more appealing, but we all use the internet heavily (game and download alot) so a sturdy and powerful router is important. i was thinking about the LINKSYS WRT54GL. what's b/g all about? The house is old, and the walls seem thin so i'm not too worried about signal strength.

    Thanks a lot.

Problem with old houses is that the walls, being of plaster/lathe construction, will probably also have loads of chicken wire in the plaster. Plays hell with any kind if wireless.

Even under ideal conditions you might not be satisfied with wireless if the whole house is running downloads, BT, and gaming.

Try to do a walk-about in the house and see if there is any way you can set up at least a few wired connections.

The DGL-4500 can only do 2.4GHz or 5.8Ghz. The DIR-825 can do both but is missing an antenna. I use the DIR-825 at school and am very happy with it. However I cant say for its range because I use it in my dorm room which is pretty small.

I'm still using the dir-655. It's a good one unless you need simultaneous dual band.

see my sig for reviews on the best.....
