    Hey,

    Looking to upgrade my router. Currently a Sitecom WL-173.

    For the simple reason that the connection is very poor on my iTouch, it usually can't connect. Which is really really annoying! I've started a tread on it and unfortunately I've not got far with a solution.

    So what I'm looking for is something that's good (obviously, haha).

    But more specially;

    • Draft-n
    • Able to cover a large area
    and can be flashed ala this article;

    Is there anything else I should be looking for in a new router... been a few years since I've bought one and haven't been keeping up to date with new features.

    Cheers for any suggestions.

    I would recommend that you check out smallnetbuilder. That site has a ton of information on networking in general and contains tons of router reviews that are much more in depth than any general tech magazine.

    Do note that although Tomato and DD-WRT can help your router improve performance, that is by far not guaranteed. If the original firmware is well written, it can be much better since the vendors can optimize their software more easily.

    Tomato does not support any N routers.
    In fact Tomato supports only a handful of older G routers.

    Most newer high end routers support almost every feature you would ever use and shouldn't need aftermarket firmware, which is known to slow down your router anyhow. Having the option of aftermarket firmware is good, but if you don't know why you need it, don't install it.

    As for router recommendations...
    The top two are the Netgear WNDR3700 followed by the Linksys e3000.

    Cheaper alternatives, which are plenty for most people, are the Linksys e2000 and Netgear WNR3500.

    i followed leslieann's (thanks a bunch :p), and a few other member's suggestions, and i finally decided to pull the trigger on the netgear WNDR3700. i picked it up from amazon (was $150 shipped) and could not be happier. i have a DD-WRT reflashed linksys wrt300n, and the WNDR3700 is definitely a step above it. the OEM firmware is performing beautifully so far.

    Hhmmmm, I'm in Ireland so I'll have to see the local prices for routers. At $150, it would be probably be €120 or so online.

    Gonna give sorting out the old router another go, before the buy, might get lucky and change something to get a chance of it working.

    EDIT: Yea comes in around €113
