I too am hunting for an N router and so far from what I'm reading, there is no consensus nor a consistant 'great' one. These boards seem to like the DIR -655 from D-Link, but this also appears to be a dated router, going back to @ 2006? Belkin also seems to bring out the haters.
My needs are simple, I'm not gaming, I will be streaming videos, but not movies, file transfer (pictures mostly). Would like to put one of my printers into this network also so I'll need usb. Lots of internet surfing, etc.
So are there companies I should avoid, or just try them and return them until I find one that works for me?

look at the asus rt n16 , just picked one up for $80.00 and it really is a great router . Great signal , and great admin panel . Easy to set up . Upgradable antennas , 2 usb ports , 128mb of ram 32 rom . Have had too many Dlink routers crap out on me , flaky firmware . Just replaced my wndr 3700 with the asus and if it had 5 ghz band enabled it would blow the 3700 away . Hope they can enable the 5 ghz band with FW , then it will be all I use , use the 3700 as an ap for 5ghz

I would put 2Wire right along with Belkin (att dsl) on ones to avoid. As far as getting one that meets your need take a look at www.smallnetbuilder.com . He tests and reviews network gear. His test does not include long term testing aka reliability. I have been looking at the new Buffalo HP router, have there 54g model and has been great. The newer HP 11n has GigE on both lan and wan ports. The neg is no power control. I would also avoid routers that do not meet the current ratified spec. Most of the ones being sold do meet but have not been certified. Most will only require a firmware update to meet the spec.
What router should I avoid?
