    What kind of router do i need

    Im not exactly sure what a router is I dont have a laptop yet but when i get one would i need a router, basically i already have internet access in the basement but want to share that access with the laptop in the upstairs room...is that the purpose of it if so where would i place it in the house and is it easy to set up to share that internet access?

    --> I would recommend the Linksys WRT54G. It is a terrific router from a reliability stand point. The router also has great 3rd party support as well. I've been using mine for at least 4 years (v1.1) running DD-WRT firmware. Definitely lasted longer than the 2wire my ISP sent me. You will not be disappointed.

    I've seen some as low as 20USD in the Sunday circulators

    Yes, the purpose of the router is to share the internet connection. I would recommend a wireless router so you can carry your laptop around the house. It should be place near your cable/dsl modem so you can easily run the ethernet cable. Also you may want to consider getting a router with ports on the back of it so you can hardwire another computer if its located in the basement and it doesn't have a wireless NIC (network interface card).

    And yes linksys is probably the best.
