I am due to receive an hp dv5t in a couple weeks. It has the Intel mini-N card with bluetooth. My question is, once I subscribe to a cable internet service provider, what will I need to connect this laptop to the internet? Router? Please be specific, I have not had to do this before. Thanks.

If you only have one computer you do not need a router. You can plug it straight into the modem with an ethernet cable.

If you want to have wireless at your home, you need a wireless router.

The router will need to be b/g or b/g/n or n or a/b/g/n capable. N is the best and should be the one you aim to get if it's easily affordable.

If you have a medium/small house and do not file share with other computers (only surf the internet), you will see no difference going to a more expensive n router over a g one.

    OK, so 2 questions:

!. Is there a benefit to having the N- card if I leave my house and steal someone elses wireless? Or did I waste $30 upgrading it? lol

    2. Can anyone recommend a decently priced N or G router?

I live in an apartment and will not be sharing a network. Budget is important to me, but I wouldn't mind paying a little more now if i means not having to buy new things in the near future.
