    The things that you attach to a laptop to catch and amplify wireless signals? Are there any that you can buy that will catch signals from far away that you couldn't get without one? How much do they cost?

    I think you are talking about a wireless card. These come in several types from USB to PCI. Then some of them allow you to replace the antenna with a higher gain antenna. Depending on the distance you may need to go to a beam type which only receive a signal from the direction it is pointing. All other signals are not received.
