I have owned a DIR-655 for the past year and a half. The past two days our internet speeds have been slow. I unplugged both the router and modem, but we still have the problem.

Would resetting the router possibly help? Coud it be dead?

Try plugging something directly into the modem. If you get the same speed issues, then you know that the problem is the router. Now, having said that, you could have a problem between the modem and router with negotiating the link speed, and I'm not sure if your model would allow you to set the speed for the internet port.

When a router is dead, it stops routing. You may be able to connect to the network through the router, but the internet won't work when the modem is connected to the router.

This. A bad router won't cause slow internet speeds. Unfortunately, a bad switch could... and pretty much all consumer routers have switches built in.
Run a speedtest with the router, then try without and compare results.
