What Modem/Router for Comcast ?

Hi again everyone!

I moved into my new apartment and ordered Comcast cable internet. But I'm not sure what modem + wireless router I should get (I'm not too interested in the ones they lease you).

It'll only be used in a small apartment with two laptops. I'm looking for something with a good distance as well as something that won't limit gaming and steaming,

Any recommendations?

 

My current go-to router is Netgear WNR3500L for good hardware (same CPU as Linksys E3000 and E4200 and 64MB RAM- same as E3000 or WNDR3700), gigabit Ethernet, USB port, good factory firmware as well as being supported by 3rd party firmwares. All this magnificence for some $70.

Only thing it doesn't have is 5GHz range- Wi-Fi is @2.4 GHz and capable of 300mbps.

That would be a router- as for the modem it might be worth looking into what Comcast is offering- ISPs tend to have some good ones at their disposal so don't dismiss it just like that.

 

The problem is Comcast charges something like $5 or $7/mo, so if you keep their service for over 6 months it's a better deal to buy one.

I've been considering it, but I don't know for sure how it all works. I do know that Comcast uses Motorola SurfBoard modems most of the time, so buying one of those is likely a safe bet.

 

You may be right but then again they are responsible for the modem and if need arises they will exchange DOCIS 2 modem for DOCIS 3 modem free of charge, or will they?
I'm asking because if you're about to buy a cable modem now DOCIS 3 ones should be the only one considered (even id ISP still uses DOCIS 2) and these can be pretty expensive- $90 is pretty normal.

 

They may, but only if you know who to ask and how to ask. Comcast regularly ties with AT&T at the very bottom of customer service rankings
