The problem I am having is with one of my laptops which uses windows to manage my wireless connections. For some reason it only lets me specify 1 wep key and I need to set 4 in order to connect to my network. My other lappy has an intel wireless card and the intel software lets me specify the 4 keys and no prob but is there anyway to specify 4 wep keys in windows?

You shouldn't need to specify 4, just the first one. What I'd really suggest is using WPA instead of WEP. It's more secure, and it's just a password rather than using cryptic hex keys.

I tried setting just the first one and that didnt work. For testing purposes I tried setting only the first one on the other lappy and no luck. It only acquires an ip if I set all 4. Regardless I guess WPA is the way to go... thanks for the suggestion.

For 128-bit WEP you can enter upto 4 keys. You might be able to specify on your router which key is used (via key index setting). Then you simply have to enter that key in Windows to get it working. You indeed should not have to enter all 4 keys.

see wep you can configure 4 keys, but you can only use one at a time. You can only use one encryption key at a time and still have a functional setup, other wise the encryption algorithm just wont work.

I agree with pitabred and use wpa instead of wep. Nowadays WEP is extremely weak, and is only OK when paired with SSID broadcast turned off, MAC/IP filtering and zone managing. WPA on the other had uses a much stronger encryption as well as changes the key for every frame. Making it impossible to gain enough information to crack the encryption with a sniffer.

But no only one key is needed for wep. the other 4 are the ones specified by the WAP and are used in a cycle. To connect you should only need one.
